ISO 19650 File Naming: Generator and Checker
Build ISO 19650 file names from your project's code set and check a pasted register field by field (separators, lengths, codes, status and revision) against the UK National Annex, 2018 or the 2021 revision.
ISO 19650-2 asks for every information container to carry a unique ID built on an agreed and documented convention of fields separated by a delimiter. The UK National Annex sets those fields (project, originator, volume or system, level or location, type, role and number) joined by the hyphen-minus, with the status and the revision as metadata beside them; its 2021 revision renamed four of the fields and left their lengths to the project. Enter your project's codes once, then build names, check a pasted register name by name, or check a status against its revision. The type, role and status lists are those the UK BIM Framework guidance reproduces, each with its source, and every list is yours to edit to your EIR.

Status and revision
A revision is P for a preliminary, non-contractual container or C for a contractual one, then two digits; work in progress adds a full stop and two digits for its version (P01.01). A container is recognisable as Published by the C prefix of its revision (NA.4.3).
The status says what a container is suitable for; the revision counts its issues. One container goes through S2, S3 and A1, and its revision moves on with each issue.

Project code set
Entered once; it travels in the link and in the workbook. The project, originator, volume and level codes are the project’s own; the type, role and status lists start from the National Annex and the project edits them to its EIR.
Fields and their lengths
0 means no limit. The 2018 National Annex recommends the lengths; the 2021 revision leaves them to the project.

Where the lists come from
BS EN ISO 19650-2 and its National Annex are sold by BSI and were not read. The lists are taken from the UK BIM Framework guidance that reproduces them and, where marked, from secondary articles. Each list names its source, and every list is editable.
The standard is under revision: ISO/DIS 19650-1 and -2 (edition 2) were at stage 40.93 on 18 August 2026. The lists here are the UK National Annex as published, and the project edits them.
Questions engineers ask
What do the fields of an ISO 19650 file name mean?
Under the UK National Annex the container ID is seven fields in this order, joined by the hyphen-minus: the project; the originator, the organisation that produced the container; the volume or system (functional breakdown in the 2021 revision); the level or location (spatial breakdown); the type of information (form); the role (discipline); and a number, sequential within its series. ZZ stands for all or multiple volumes or locations and XX for none. The status and the revision are metadata; a project may append them to the name, and the checker reads them when it does.
Which codes does the project set, and which come from the standard?
The project, originator, volume or system and level or location codes are the project's own, set in its information standard. The type, role and status codes are the National Annex lists, which a project may extend. The page ships those lists from the guidance that reproduces them, names the source of each, and lets every list (the project's and the standard's) be edited; the whole code set travels in the link and in the Excel file.
What is the difference between the status and the revision?
The status, or suitability, says what a container may be used for: S1 suitable for coordination, S2 for information, A1 authorized and accepted. The revision counts its issues: P01, P02 for preliminary, non-contractual issues, C01 for contractual ones, and a full stop with two more digits for a work-in-progress version, P01.01. In the National Annex table S0 takes a preliminary revision and version, the shared S codes and B a preliminary revision, and A and CR a contractual one.
What changed in the 2021 revision of the UK National Annex?
The revised National Annex of February 2021 renamed volume or system to functional breakdown, level or location to spatial breakdown, type to form and role to discipline; removed the recommended field lengths; withdrew S6, S7 and CR; used S4 and S5 for authorization and acceptance; and revised the discipline codes. The page offers both editions. Its 2021 discipline and status lists come from secondary articles and say so, and the 2021 form table could not be read from a free source, so the 2018 type list is carried and marked for validation.
Is ISO 19650 being revised?
Yes. ISO/DIS 19650-1 and ISO/DIS 19650-2, both edition 2, were at stage 40.93 (full report circulated, decision for a new DIS ballot) on 18 August 2026, and the new Part 2 is to replace ISO 19650-2:2018 and ISO 19650-3:2020. The National Annex codes may change with it, which is why every field and list on this page is set per project.
How do I use it on a Saudi project?
Enter the codes your client's exchange information requirements or the BIM execution plan set (the project, the originators, the volumes and the levels) pick the National Annex edition the project follows, and edit the type, role and status lists where the EIR differs. Copy the link and send it to the team: everyone builds and checks names on the same code set, and the register exports to Excel for the document controller.
What does the checker flag?
A separator that is not the hyphen-minus (an en or em dash, a minus sign, an underscore or a space) a missing or an extra field, lower case, a character other than A–Z and 0–9, the wrong number of characters, a code missing from the project's lists, a status that is not in the list or has been withdrawn, a revision of the wrong shape or family, and a duplicate line. Each error is shown on its field, with the reason.
